Alfred Santell

Alfred Santell, nato Alfred Allen Santell (San Francisco, 14 settembre 1895 – Salinas, 19 giugno 1981), è stato un regista, sceneggiatore e produttore cinematografico statunitense.

Si firmava anche Alfred A. Santell o Al Santell.

Biografia

Ex architetto (si era laureato alla Los Angeles University), cominciò a lavorare nel 1914 come factotum negli studi cinematografici della Lubin Manufacturing Company ma ben presto passò dietro alla macchina da presa, dirigendo molti cortometraggi a uno o due rulli di Mack Sennett e Hal Roach.

Nella sua carriera diresse oltre sessanta film tra cui Sotto i ponti di New York (1936), presentato in concorso alla Mostra del cinema di Venezia del 1937.

Era sposato con l'attrice Jane Keithley che morì a soli 36 anni, lasciandolo vedovo. Santell si ritirò dalla professione due anni dopo la morte della moglie, nel 1946, dopo aver diretto un paio di B-movie per la Republic Pictures.

Morì il 19 giugno 1981 a Salinas, in California, all'età di 85 anni.
